The Espina
The Espina is more than a huarache—it’s a statement of heritage, precision, and generational artistry.
Ranked at a 4.5 out of 5 in weaving difficulty, this design is among the most intricate in the huarache world. It requires deep technical skill, patience, and mastery. At its heart is a signature detail: a spine-like ridge that runs along the vamp—handcrafted only after the shoe is fully woven. This final flourish is the artisan’s mark, achieved through a special technique known only to the craftsman who pioneered it.
This particular silhouette was originally created by Señor Ochoa, the father of the very artisans who now lead the factory where our huaraches are made. His legacy lives on through the Espina—an in-house design passed down from generation to generation and revived by Vintage Artisan to ensure this tradition is never forgotten.
The two-tone colorway pays tribute to that legacy, blending classic tones in a bold, sophisticated contrast. Within the huarache-making community, this design is considered the pinnacle—a collector’s piece, a nod to tradition, and a celebration of Mexican craftsmanship at its finest.
